I slept about 3. 5 hours between the plane and the floor of JFK, so apologies in advance.
I hate to reify gender any more than it already is, but. . .
New York City and San Francisco have two of the biggest gender gaps in the country at +8% women to +6% men respectively. It might just be because I'm sitting in a cafe called "The Butcher's Daughter", full of plants, wicker, pastel colors and cute little throw pillows, but it's all I can focus on. Then again, I also live in the Castro, which probably just enhances the contrast.
Searching around, I discovered Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions. The US as a whole gets a moderately high masculinity score of 62 points (The Netherlands is way at the bottom at 14). Top of the list are Japan and Hungary. For individualism, both the US and the Netherlands are way at the top, though of course, the US takes the cake. Feels not crazy to me.
Gender according to Geert:
- Fem: a preference for cooperation, modesty, caring for the weak, and quality of life.
- Masc: a preference for achievement, heroism, assertiveness, and material rewards for success.
(The masc-fem dimension has been renamed to "motivation toward achievement and success", after complaints)
The Bay might be the most masculine place I've ever been.
Fuck I need a nap.
